EMobile D01NE on Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn

The EM D01NE is a (I think) HSDPA PCMCIA card. The driver for the modem comes with Ubuntu 7.04 (Maybe before). I get about 2Mbps from it (max is 3.8).

Getting this setup in Ubuntu is easier than getting it setup with Windows. The only gotcha is that you have to install Gnome-PPP first, since it doesn’t come with Ubuntu. I’ll try later using gnome-network-settings and report it in another post.

  • First install GNOME-PPP using synaptic or apt-get
  • Run it and press the setup button
  • Press the detect button, it should find /dev/ttyACM0
  • Speed: 460800
  • Phone Line: Tone
  • Volume: High
  • In the Init Strings change Init2 to ATH0E1
  • Leave Init 3 alone
  • Leave Dial prefix empty
  • Username: em
  • Password: em
  • Phone number *99***1# (Some people have success with just *99#)
  • Internet!

  1. D01HW – USB Model EMobile

Works almost out of the box with ubuntu 7.10

With some slight exception to your guide, noted below.
(shouldn’t need any user intervention, other than user/pass)

Detect will recognize it as “/dev/ttyUSB0”
    Init String #1 “ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0”
(leave these settings alone, they work fine)

Basically once gnome-ppp is installed (using apt-get)
Add the user & pass (em) and leave everything else alone.
It will work just like that, the only is that you won’t actually be notified of a “connect” status, it will just say “connecting” and if you look at the log, it will report that you have established a local & remote IP as well as primary & secondary DNS.

  2. Hi guys,

I’ve installed fedora 8 in my PC, and it has recognized and configured my emobile hardware; however, I still can’t make connection with the network settings you guys mentioned above. Please help if you’ve tried using emobile on fedora 8. Thank you, appreciate it!

  3. I’m not sure if it’s the same problem but In the most recent version of Ubuntu, Gnome-PPP has a bug in it where the window gets stuck saying “Connecting” Even though after about 30 seconds it actually does connect. I filed the bug in Ubuntu’s bug tracker with a patch that fixes it. You can check it out as well at
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/121487

In the future though we should be working on making sure that e-mobile devices work with network-manager. Since you are on Fedora I highly encourage you to investigate getting your connection working with a recent release or developer version of Network Manager (http://www.gnome.org/projects/NetworkManager/). I’m no longer in Japan so I can’t test it myself. If it doesn’t work see if you can subscribe to the Network Manager mailing list and give them all the information you can including the info on my post.

Please keep me posted on any advancements you make with Network Manager.

  4. Will do for sure….Thanks anyway!

  5. Haha! Small world. Thinking of putting Ubuntu on my eeepc but I have to use my D02HW on it. Thanks for the info.
